Every summer since 2010, my family has loaded up the car (plus enough snacks to feed a small army) and headed to Holden Beach, North Carolina. Over the years, it’s become more than just a vacation spot. My mother-in-law owns a house on the island, and Holden has turned into our home away from home—where some of our sweetest family memories have been made. Heck, we even named our middle son Holden because it holds such a special place in our hearts.

A Photographer’s Happy Place: The Magic of Beach Photos
As a photographer, I spend most of my time capturing families and babies back home in Pennsylvania… but there’s just something about photographing at the beach that feels like a gift to myself.
The soft pastel skies, golden light bouncing off the waves, and the barefoot, sandy hair kind of joy that kids naturally bring—it’s a dream.
We don’t get to do beach sessions often, so when I’m here, I fully lean in. Whether it’s snapping photos of my own kids running through the surf or squeezing in a few sessions for families visiting Holden, this island always inspires me.
If you’ve ever thought about booking a Holden Beach family photographer, trust me when I say… you won’t regret it.

Local Favorites You Can’t Miss on Holden Beach
Our beach trips aren’t just about the photos though—there are a few local spots that are absolute must-visits for us every year.
Beaches-N-Cream Ice Cream
If you’re looking for the best ice cream on Holden Beach, this is it. Hands down, our family favorite. But here’s the thing—get there early. The line can get long (like, out to the street long), but it’s 100% worth the wait. Every flavor is delicious and the vibe is pure beach town nostalgia. Be sure to check their Facebook page for that day’s flavors!
Day Tripping to Southport, NC
Another tradition we never skip: a full day trip to Southport.
It’s just a short drive from Holden. And trust my, it’s got all the historic small beach town charm you could want.
We always stop for lunch at Fishy Fishy Café (outdoor seating by the water = YES please). The Mahi bites are a family favorite. After eating, we take our time walking along the docks, soaking up the history, and of course… making a stop at the The Christmas House. It’s a cute Victorian house filled with candy, ornaments, and a whole lot of coastal charm.
If you love wandering through little shops, eating seafood by the water, and letting your kids pick out a treat or two… you’ll love Southport just as much as we do.
