When To Schedule Newborn Photos And Why It Matters

If there is one thing every new parent learns fast, it is that time does not care if you are ready. One minute you are counting kicks and googling bassinets and the next you are home staring at the tiniest eyelashes you have ever seen wondering how on earth they let you leave the hospital with a whole human.

That newborn stage is pure magic. And it is also ridiculously fleeting.

So when is the best time to book newborn photos?

The short and sweet answer: book during your second trimester
(around 20 to 28 weeks pregnant is ideal)

This gives you:
• Plenty of availability to choose from
• Time to plan your session, outfits, and location
• Zero last minute stress while you are busy growing a baby

And when do we actually take the photos?

Most newborn photographers, including me, aim for 7 to 21 days after birth. That little window is the sweet spot because:

• Babies are still teeny and curled up
• They are super sleepy and easy to gently pose
• Their skin is usually the softest and smoothest
• You get those tiny details before they change

But here is a real life secret: if your baby needs extra time in the hospital or life feels chaotic, we can absolutely still capture beautiful newborn photos beyond that 3 week mark. Every baby is on their own timeline.

Why timing matters for Central PA families

That is normal. I pencil your due date on my calendar and keep room to shift once baby arrives. We will plan your session after your little one makes their grand entrance.

You will never regret having newborn photos

As a mom of 3, I know exactly how fast those first weeks fade away. The milk-drunk smiles. The tiny toes curled around your finger. The way they fit perfectly on your chest.

These are the memories worth holding onto forever.

FAQ

How far in advance should we book newborn photos?
I recommend booking during your second trimester. It guarantees a spot on my calendar and gives us plenty of time to plan your session and wardrobe. Babies like to keep us guessing on arrival dates, but pre-booking lets me stay flexible.

What’s the best age for newborn photos?
Most sessions take place when baby is 7 to 21 days old. During that time, they’re still extra sleepy, curled up, and brand-new—perfect for those soft, snuggly images everyone loves.

Do you offer in-home newborn sessions?
Yes. If you prefer a cozy, relaxed environment that feels personal to your family’s story, I can come right to you. I also have a beautiful studio in Etters if you love a clean, styled look.

What if my baby is older than 3 weeks?
It’s totally fine. Every baby is different. We might focus a little more on wrapped, awake, or in-parents-arms poses, but you’ll still get images that feel special and true to your little one.

What happens if baby comes early or late?
Honestly, it happens all the time. I pencil in your due date and then shift the session once baby arrives. No stress—just send me a message when they’re here and we’ll lock in the perfect day.

Can siblings and parents be in the photos?
Absolutely. Your baby will never be this tiny again, and these early family shots become some of the most cherished images over time.
