On today’s blog I want to share with you my best kept birthday & special event secret. (In addition to scheduling & displaying photos from a cake smash or milestone session with Kate McCord Photography) Fancy, custom cookies! I love spoiling my kids with custom iced cookies for their birthdays, Valentine’s Day, and Christmas! I also enjoy treating their teachers to special events with cookies too! And they’re ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS a big hit!
There are so many talented cookiers in our area, but hands down my personal favorite best custom cookies in Harrisburg, PA has to be Sarah Wesley, owner of Wesley Made Sweets! Sarah is a wife and momma of 3 boys (ages 8, 11 and 13). She loves learning new things and is always trying to get creative. Seeing people smile is one of her favorite things!
If you’ve followed Kate McCord Photography for any length of time, you’ll know she’s the baker behind the magical cookies I include with my Santa sessions and the co-owner of The Floss Boss (with her son!) who I collaborated with on our Candy Shoppe Minis last May! Not only are her cookies beautiful, but they taste incredible too!
Recently, I took some time to interview Sarah and gain a unique perspective on her business! CHECK IT OUT!
When did you first start your business?
April 20th, 2021 is the day I got my license for my in-home food business.
Why did you start your baking the best custom cookies in Harrisburg PA?
My why takes us back 13 years ago. I was a young mom and couldn’t afford cute cakes for my son so I decided to try to make my own. Cakes slowly turned into decorated cookies and as I learned more I truly fell in love. At the time, we were living in an apartment and I couldn’t get licensed through the state so I continued to make goodies for friends and family.
We then moved from Dillsburg, PA to Enola, PA and the moment I walked into our home I knew the one section was going to be my ‘cookie room’. A few things delayed me going for it (mostly anxiety and fear) but during the pandemic I decided I needed to jump in and if it worked then great and if not, I can say I tried. My why started and still is for my family. I absolutely love what I do and still squeal like a school girl when my treats turn out adorable! (I feel this exact same way when I snag an incredible shot for my photography families!!)
What areas do you serve/where are you located?
I am located in Enola, PA. I am currently serving Central PA but can ship to any addresses in Pennsylvania. (Wesley Made Sweets is located just across the river from Harrisburg, PA and easily accessible from Mechanicsburg, Camp Hill, and Northern York County!)
What is your favorite custom cookie related thing to make?
My favorite thing to make is my custom cookie sets. I truly enjoy the entire process from brainstorming with my clients, making the designs to fit their vision and then baking and decorating them. I am constantly feeling like I have a new favorite set and love all of the ideas brought to me.
My favorite thing to do is my cookie classes. It is so much fun to go from seeing my participants worried that their cookies will turn out bad to them adding the final details and realizing they really made something beautiful. (Sarah teaches cookie classes at Creative Spark Arts in New Cumberland, PA. I highly recommend checking out her classes, they look like so much fun!)
My middle son and I also started cotton candy on the side. He’s the Floss Boss but I am usually the one who ends up covered in sugar! I absolutely love making the cotton candy with him because we always have lots of laughs and quality one on one time.
What is your favorite small business in Central PA?
I have many favorite small businesses in Central PA but two that I like to talk about a lot. Creative Spark Arts in New Cumberland is one of them. I had never heard of them until I was searching for places to hold my cookie classes. The owners are amazing as well as all of the other class teachers. It quickly felt like a family to me.
The other is Bingco. They make freeze dried candy and the owners are also absolutely amazing.
