There is something extra magical about a summer maternity session when everything somehow falls perfectly into place. The weather had looked questionable all week leading up to this session, and I remember checking the forecast more times than I’d like to admit. But somehow, by the evening of their shoot, the skies cleared, the light softened, and we ended up with the most beautiful night in the poppy fields in East Berlin, PA.
And honestly? I don’t think we could have dreamed up a more perfect setting for this sweet family.
During this session, Katie was expecting baby number eight. Yes… EIGHT. Six girls and two boys. I feel like that alone deserves a standing ovation. Their family is truly one of the kindest families, and it made this session even more special because their kiddos go to school with mine. It’s always such an honor when another local mom trusts me to document such an important season of life.

One thing people always assume is that photographing big families must be chaotic, but honestly, I often think large families are easier to photograph than small ones. I don’t know exactly what it is. Maybe bigger families are just more accustomed to a little chaos and movement. Maybe everyone learns to listen better out of pure necessity for survival. Whatever the reason, large families often settle into connection so naturally, and this session was no exception.
The kids were sweet with each other, excited about the new baby, and completely up for wandering through the flowers together. Those are always the moments I love most anyway. The in-between moments. The real ones.
The poppy field in East Berlin was actually Katie’s idea, and I’m so glad she suggested it. The vibrant reds paired with the soft evening sunlight created such a dreamy backdrop for maternity photos. It felt peaceful, warm, and full of life, which honestly feels like the perfect reflection of this family.

One of my favorite things about maternity sessions is getting to freeze this tiny little pause before everything changes again. Right now, they are a family of nine. Soon they’ll be ten. These are the moments that deserve to be remembered, even in the middle of busy schedules, wild toddlers, questionable weather forecasts, and all the beautiful chaos that comes with raising a big family.

Frequently Asked Questions About Maternity Photos
“What should I wear to my outdoor maternity session?”
You are definitely not alone. Honestly, this is probably the number one stressor for moms before their session. The good news is you do not have to figure it out alone. I help guide all of my maternity clients with styling, color palettes, and outfit coordination for the whole family. I also have a client closet available with beautiful dresses specifically chosen to photograph well and flatter growing bumps.
The goal is for you to feel comfortable, beautiful, and like yourself… not overly styled or stressed.
“When should I book maternity photos?”
I always recommend booking your maternity session during your second trimester if possible, especially if you’re hoping for a spring or fall outdoor session since those dates tend to go quickly.
Most maternity sessions take place around 28-34 weeks pregnant. During that window, most moms still feel relatively comfortable while also having a beautifully visible bump.
“Where should I have maternity photos taken?”
This depends so much on the overall vibe you love. Some families are drawn to open fields, flower farms, creeks, or gardens, while others prefer a more simple studio setting with a clean and timeless feel.
I help all of my clients choose a location that fits their vision, wardrobe, and family dynamic. The poppy field in East Berlin ended up being such a perfect choice for this session because it felt vibrant, warm, and full of personality while still allowing the focus to stay on their connection together.
