You just brought your baby home. You’re running on broken sleep, your living room has a bouncer in the corner and a burp cloth on every surface, and somewhere in the back of your mind you’re thinking, “I really want photos of this, but I have no idea how this is supposed to work.” That feeling is completely normal – and it’s exactly what I had in mind when I built my sessions around real families in real homes, not a staged setup that requires everything to be perfect before we can begin.
A lifestyle newborn session isn’t about creating something flawless. It’s about capturing what this season actually looks and feels like, right now, in the home where your baby is sleeping and your toddler is leaving crumbs on the couch. Here’s what you can realistically expect when we work together.
Your Home Doesn’t Need to Be Picture-Perfect
This is the thing I hear most often, and I want to put it to rest right away.
Parents genuinely believe their home needs to be spotless and filled with large, magazine-worthy windows before a session can happen. It doesn’t.
We only need one to three spots in your home – sometimes even just one. I’ve done an entire newborn session in front of a family’s beautiful bay window, and the images were breathtaking. One good source of natural light and a space where you feel comfortable is enough.
Tidy up if it helps you feel relaxed. But please don’t stress about it. I’m not photographing your home. I’m photographing your family.

Flexible Means Something Specific Here
A lot of photographers use the word “flexible,” but I want to tell you what it actually looks like in practice.
I know when to keep the camera moving and when to put it down and give everyone space. If your baby needs to feed, we pause. You can let me know if you’d like me to step out of the room, or I can stay and photograph you nursing or feeding your baby – whichever feels right to you. There’s no rushing past those moments. They’re part of the story.
I also want to be honest about timing: you don’t need to clear your whole day for this. A lifestyle in-home newborn session takes around 60 to 90 minutes. That’s enough time to capture a full, beautiful, memorable gallery without anyone feeling worn out or stretched thin.

What Happens When Your Toddler Wants No Part of This
Let’s talk about the older sibling, because this comes up in almost every session with a toddler in the house.
It usually goes something like this: the toddler is completely uninterested and wants absolutely nothing to do with taking photos. And that’s okay – that’s just toddlers being toddlers.
What I’ve found is that when we step back, relax the energy in the room, and give the toddler ways to feel important and included rather than directed, everything shifts. They get curious. They start participating on their own terms. And the photos that come from those moments – when they’re genuinely engaged and having fun – are some of the most real and joyful images from the entire session.
You don’t need to prep your toddler for this or give them a pep talk beforehand. I’ll follow their lead.

What This Session Is Really Built Around
Everything about how I approach a lifestyle session comes back to one idea: you shouldn’t have to manage the experience while you’re in the middle of it.
You just had a baby. Your job is to be present. My job is everything else.
I’ll guide you through the session naturally so nothing feels stiff or posed. I’ll read the room and adjust if the energy shifts. I’ll handle the pacing so you’re not watching the clock. And when it’s over, you’ll have a gallery of images that feel like this exact season of your life – honest, warm, and worth holding onto.
These aren’t just photos. They are your baby’s very first love story, and I take that seriously.
